Does NordVPN Work in China? What NordVPN Itself Says (2026)

Published Oct 13, 2026

Don't count on NordVPN in China. As of October 2026, NordVPN's own help center says its apps are 'fully blocked in China' on iPhone, Android, Mac, Linux and Android TV. On Windows, it says both its apps and its manual configurations 'have recently been blocked'. It offers a fiddly manual IKEv2 setup for some devices, with no promise that it will work.

That puts this page at odds with many 'yes, it works' articles. We take the provider's own dated statements over third-party claims, because NordVPN has every reason to say its service works and is saying the opposite. Below: exactly what NordVPN says, what its workaround involves, the legal context, and a backup plan for travellers. This is travel information, not legal advice.

The short, honest answer

No, not reliably, and NordVPN says so itself. Its main China support article describes the problem plainly: 'You can't connect to NordVPN while being in China', with the app stuck on 'Connecting' or showing errors. The device-specific articles, updated between mid-September and early October 2026, confirm the apps are blocked. They point users to a manual connection method instead of the app.

If you're choosing a VPN specifically for a China trip, NordVPN shouldn't be your only plan. If you already pay for it, NordVPN's manual setup is worth preparing as one of several fallbacks, set up and saved before you leave.

What NordVPN itself says about China

NordVPN's help center on China by device: apps blocked on iPhone/iPad, Android, Mac, Linux and Android TV, with manual IKEv2 steps offered; on Windows and Apple TV, apps and manual configurations blocked with no steps offered.

NordVPN keeps a separate China article for each platform, and they fall into two groups.

  • Blocked app, manual workaround offered: iPhone and iPad, Android, Mac, Linux and Android TV. Each article opens with the same line, that the NordVPN app 'is fully blocked in China', and then gives manual IKEv2/IPsec setup steps.
  • Blocked, no workaround: Windows and Apple TV. NordVPN says its 'server configurations for manual connections and applications have recently been blocked'. The Windows article adds that its developers are 'working on a solution' and suggests connecting on a different device.

Notice what the China articles don't recommend. NordVPN's general guide for countries with internet restrictions suggests its NordWhisper protocol, obfuscated servers and OpenVPN over TCP. Its China-specific pages skip all three and go straight to manual IKEv2. Many third-party guides still tell readers to use NordVPN's obfuscated servers with OpenVPN TCP. NordVPN has since moved those servers to NordWhisper and says they can no longer be reached through a manual OpenVPN setup.

What the manual IKEv2 workaround involves

The workaround uses your device's built-in IKEv2 VPN support, or the free strongSwan app on Android and Linux, instead of the NordVPN app. In outline, NordVPN's steps are:

  1. Download NordVPN's IKEv2 root certificate and install it as trusted on the device.
  2. Create a new IKEv2 VPN profile and enter a server address and matching hostname from the short list NordVPN publishes in the article.
  3. Sign in to your Nord Account, open the manual-setup section and verify your email to reveal your 'service credentials', a separate username and password.
  4. Paste those credentials into the profile and connect.

Two details matter for travellers. You need working access to both your Nord Account and your email to get the credentials, so do this at home, where neither is blocked. And the server list is short and fixed, so if those servers get blocked the workaround stops too. NordVPN makes no promise about how long it will keep working. On Android, its steps also set the tunnel's MTU to 1280 and block IPv6 traffic outside the VPN.

Independent testsNone verifiableWe found no recent, dated test we could confirm

We looked for recent independent tests and couldn't find any we could verify and date reliably. Plenty of pages claim NordVPN works in China. Many come from sites that earn a commission on NordVPN sales, and many still describe the old obfuscated-server setup that NordVPN has retired.

That's why this page relies on NordVPN's own statements. When a provider's help center says its app is blocked, that outweighs a review saying it isn't. If NordVPN updates those articles to say service has been restored, we'll update this page with the date.

Settings that matter: obfuscated servers and NordWhisper

Outside China, NordVPN's tools for restricted networks are NordWhisper and its obfuscated servers, which now run on NordWhisper. NordVPN lists NordWhisper on Windows, Android, Linux, iOS and macOS. It describes it as built for 'restrictive local network environments' such as office, campus and filtered public Wi-Fi. NordVPN doesn't claim NordWhisper works in China, and its China pages don't mention it.

So the honest summary is that these settings help on hotel, university and workplace networks, and in some countries with lighter filtering. They are not a China solution according to NordVPN itself. If your trip includes other restrictive destinations, NordVPN with NordWhisper may still be useful there. Check each country's rules first.

Before you fly: install, test, backup

Pre-travel checklist: read the legal position, check your provider's own China page, install and sign in at home, save backup routes, test away from home Wi-Fi, and plan for having no VPN.
Six steps to finish before departure. Editorial checklist, October 2026; not legal advice.

Treat VPN access in China as something that may fail. Prepare at home, where everything you need is reachable:

  • Read the rules first. Our China legality guide explains the grey area and how enforcement has worked in practice.
  • Check your provider's own China page, and its date. Don't rely on a review. NordVPN's support pages are blunt, and other providers should be judged on what they publish.
  • Install everything before you leave. VPN websites and app-store listings are often unreachable from inside China. Sign in, save credentials and download any certificates while you're still at home.
  • Have more than one route. If you use NordVPN, set up the manual IKEv2 profile as well as the app. Consider a second provider whose own documentation addresses heavy censorship. Windscribe, for example, says its Stealth and WStunnel modes may help in China. Mullvad offers four anti-censorship methods. Neither pays us a commission.
  • Test away from your home Wi-Fi, on mobile data, a few days before you go.
  • Plan to manage without a VPN. Download offline maps and translation packs, save bookings and documents offline, and install the local apps you'll need for payments and messaging.

Our China field guide compares providers on what they say about China and how recently they said it. Re-check it close to departure.

Bought NordVPN for a China trip? Your refund options

If you subscribed mainly for China, NordVPN's refund policy is worth knowing before you travel. Its support pages promise a 30-day money-back guarantee, valid for first purchases only; renewals aren't refundable. If you bought through Apple's App Store, NordVPN can't refund you; you request it from Apple. For Google Play purchases you can also request a refund through Google within 48 hours of paying.

Requests for a website purchase start in NordVPN's live chat, which sends you a link to verify your identity and choose the payment to refund. Do this before the 30 days run out, and ideally before you travel, since NordVPN's own pages may be hard to reach from inside China.

What to look for in a China backup

No provider can promise access in China, so judge them on evidence you can check. A useful backup provider:

  • Publishes China-specific guidance with a date, on its own site, and updates it when things change, as NordVPN does even when the news is bad.
  • Offers more than one way to disguise traffic, so one block doesn't end your access. Mullvad, for instance, has four anti-censorship methods, and Windscribe has two wrapped modes.
  • Supports manual configurations you can save before departure, not only an app that must reach the provider's servers to log in.
  • Has a refund window you can test within, such as Mullvad's 14 days or Proton's 30-day full refund on a first purchase.

Whatever you choose, keep expectations low and your preparation thorough. The people who cope best are the ones who planned for the VPN not working.

Using a VPN in China is a legal grey area. The legal basis usually cited is China's regulations on international computer networking, issued in 1996 and most recently revised in March 2024. Article 6 says no unit or individual may 'establish or use other channels for international networking' outside the state's gateways. Article 14 lets public security organs order disconnection, issue a warning and impose a fine of up to RMB 15,000. We read the text on a public mirror of the official regulation. A 2017 notice from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology barred unapproved VPN lines for cross-border business. The ministry's own Q&A says it targets unlicensed VPN businesses, not companies' own office links.

How this is enforced has varied, and it's covered in our dedicated China legality guide. The practical point is that an unapproved VPN sits outside the approved framework. Keep your use to legitimate privacy and to reaching your own home services, and never use a VPN to do anything that is an offence in China. For anything with real stakes, take advice from someone qualified in Chinese law.

Edge cases

  • Business travellers: many multinationals provide licensed cross-border connectivity or corporate VPNs. That's the approved route, so use your employer's arrangement where one exists.
  • Hong Kong and Macau: these have internet arrangements separate from the mainland's. A trip that only goes there is a different case, so check their rules on their own. Our VPN law by country guide lists where each place stands.
  • Long stays: residents face more exposure than short-term visitors. Read the legal guide closely before relying on any VPN for months.
  • Already in China and the app won't connect: NordVPN's own advice is the manual IKEv2 route on supported devices, which needs your Nord Account and email. If those are blocked too, there's little you can fix from inside.

NordVPN in China: common questions

Does NordVPN work in China?
Don't rely on it. As of October 2026 NordVPN's help center says its apps are 'fully blocked in China' on iPhone, Android, Mac, Linux and Android TV, and that its apps and manual configurations are blocked on Windows. It offers a manual IKEv2 setup for some devices, with no promise it will keep working.
Can I use NordVPN obfuscated servers in China?
NordVPN's China articles don't recommend them. Its obfuscated servers now run on NordWhisper, which NordVPN describes as built for restrictive networks such as office or campus Wi-Fi. It makes no China claim for it. Its China-specific advice is a manual IKEv2/IPsec connection instead.
How do I set up NordVPN manually for China?
NordVPN's steps are to install its IKEv2 root certificate, create an IKEv2 profile with a server from its published list, and sign in with service credentials from your Nord Account. That requires email verification. Do all of this at home before you travel, as your account and email may be unreachable in China.
Is it legal to use NordVPN in China?
It's a grey area. China's networking regulations bar unapproved international channels and allow fines of up to RMB 15,000, and consumer VPNs aren't on the approved list. The 2017 government notice on VPNs targets unlicensed VPN businesses rather than individual users. Check current official advice before you go; this isn't legal advice.
What's the best backup if NordVPN fails in China?
Prepare more than one route at home: NordVPN's manual IKEv2 profile if you have an account, a second provider whose own documentation addresses heavy censorship, and a plan for managing without a VPN. Windscribe, for example, says its Stealth and WStunnel modes may help in China.
